It's only within the recent past that people learned that, while raw essentia crystals can provide enormous power, it's more reliable (and often a more efficient use of less-potent stones) to manufacture batteries. These "essentia cells" are now widely available across the realm, making magic more accessible and the Drylands increasingly wealthy.
The manufactories that make them are built up the sides of The Twin Turtles above Wyllin's Gulch, fed by conveyor lifts hauling tons of crystal out of the mines. Most folk use cells to power their homes, weapons, and all manner of magical items.
The Harlan Family exists to stop their production.
